North London Heat and Power Project Construction Workers Start Returning to Work Sites

1 Jun 2020

Today, 1 June, North London Waste Authority has announced its contractors have recommenced construction activity on the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP). The contractors Buckingham Group Contracting and Galldris have new health and safety plans in place on NLHPP sites which align every workers’ activity with the guidance from the Construction Leadership Council on Covid-19.

New safety measures are in place for the workforce on the sites, including, temperature checks, additional PPE, extra sanitiser, and handwashing stations. To ensure workers are correctly adhering to the new Construction Phase Plans extra marshals are being allocated to each site to monitor activity. Cleaning resources on construction sites have also been increased in response to Covid-19 plans by each of the contractors.

Social distancing across all sites is paramount to the safety of all and everyone will always aim to maintain this. Certain tasks require workers to be within 2m of each other for construction health and safety reasons. In such circumstances and in line with Government guidance on construction work, correct safety measures, including specialist PPE, temperature checks and handwashing, will be adhered to.

Programme Director, David Cullen says, ‘I am delighted our workforce is back onsite having agreed with our contractors the best practices to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing remains our number one priority as we return to full construction activity. We’re also listening to the experience of our workforce and actively assessing developing thinking across the wider construction industry to manage the Covid-19 risk and keep our workers safe.’

Construction activity will usually take place between 8am and 6pm on weekdays (Monday-Friday excluding bank holidays) and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. Workers can arrive and exit the sites up to half an hour outside these times. We will provide advance notice to neighbours if any work outside these times is required and more information can be found on northlondonheatandpower.london.
